For many of us, maintaining a great appearance with a healthy lifestyle is all about balance. When one area of your life is taking up too much time, this balance can be totally knocked off. Something can take up a lot of time for countless people is body hair removal. Constantly repurchasing, gels, creams and razors not only bites into your purse, but most importantly, your time. At Allison Jeffrey, our laser hair removal treatment is a long-term solution to your body hair woes. In this blog post, we’ll answer some of the most commonly asked questions, to ensure you have plenty of information when deciding if laser hair removal is for you.
1. How does laser hair removal work?
Hair is removed by a laser emitting a wavelength, which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. This is done without damaging the surrounding skin. The light is then converted to heat energy, which destroys the root. This disables the hair follicle’s blood supply, preventing the growth of another hair.
2. How many treatments will I need?
The amount of treatments required is very much dependant on the area being treated. Thicker, denser hair will require more treatments. Also, your skin type can have an effect on the amount of treatments required to achieve your desired results. 4-6 treatments are usually recommended, but this can be less or more depending on the treated area. You will be explained all of this during your consultation.
3. Does the treatment hurt?
Again, the answer to this is very subjective and different for each client. Each person has a different pain threshold and it depends on the area being treated. Past clients have described the pain as like an elastic band, being snapped against your skin. But the sensation is perfectly tolerated by many people, meaning it is not painful. It is recommended that you do not drink caffeine before your treatment, as this can actually make you more sensitive to pain.
4. What is the after-care like?
Due to your skin being rather sensitive post-treatment, we recommend you avoid hot showers and baths, steam rooms, saunas, swimming pool and exercise for 24-48 hours. Also, we advise that you do not use sunbeds on the area or expose the treated area to direct sunlight. You shouldn’t wear tight clothes, such as skinny jeans or tights up to 48 hours post-treatment.
5. Can I wax/shave before or after my treatment?
At Allison Jeffrey, we advise that you do not shave the day of your treatment. You can do so the day before, but shaving exfoliates the skin, making it more sensitive. Therefore, the treatment will be more uncomfortable for you. We absolutely recommend that you do not wax before your treatment. If you remove the hair, there will be nothing to target.
During the treatment, you are welcome to shave between sessions. However, waxing or plucking completely removes the hair and for the laser removal treatment to be successful, the laser needs a hair to target. After your treatment, we ask that you just use your laser removal treatment until you have your desired results.
